What to expect:

  • A 24 hours hackathon (overnight)
  • Limiting to 500 developers across Indonesia
  • Build applications. You're free to choose your own platform (native, mobile, web etc)
  • Top 3 prizes provided for best hacks
  • 10+ challenges posted to developers by local and international tech brands with attractive prizes including cash prizes, gadgets, internship opportunities, and potential investments. (Challenges to be announced soon)
  • Demo Day on 30th November (one week after hackathon) for serious developers to polish up their apps and to work on their pitches. Publishable apps are most welcome

Challenge:

  1. The apps developed in hackathon must be Android based.
  2. Developers must use in-apps payment using Ustore mechanism (http://u-store.co.id/developer)
  3. Developer must register at ustore to get their username and passwords (http://u-store.co.id/developer/index.php/home/register) and report to the Telkomsel PIC at the venue about the account that will be used for hackathon event.
  4. Developers must use the native android development kit to build the Apps.
  5. Developers must install the Ustore app on their phone in order to test their apps. The app can be downloaded from http://u-store.co.id/appstore/ from your android smartphone and make sure to use Telkomsel SIM card.

  7. Developers can only use Rp.100 pricepoint as their in-apps price any other pricepoint used will be rejected.

Demonstrate the applicability of SAP HANA in addressing Indonesia-specific social or business opportunities.

Examples

  • Usage of SAP HANA platform in creating a highly efficient mobile payment processing system;

  • Can SAP technologies be used in predicting and preventing high traffic (use of Predictive Analytics component of HANA);

  • How can the natural language processing capabilities of SAP HANA platform (SAP HANA Text Analysis) be used to better understand social media?

Judging criteria:

The competing teams will be expected to present a compelling social or business scenario, demonstrate the strengths of SAP HANA platform in this context, and present a prototype implementation of the solution. The winning team will be chosen by SAP experts.

  • Top team wins 4 return air ticket (TigerAir) to Singapore

  • Lodging (Blanc Inn) provided

  • Allowance of Sgd 400 provided for the team,

  • Chance to work and learn alongside SAP developers. (Date of travel: 4-7 December).

Build a Windows Store (Modern UI) game for Windows 8/8.1. Developers can use any game maker or any engine available, including Unity 3D, Construct, Game Maker, etc. Developers can also write using any language of your choice, as long as the game is a Windows Store game. Judging criteria:

Judging criteria is based on quality, idea uniqueness, and business potential.

Prizes:

The three best games selected be will awarded a Windows 8 tablet each.

  • Demonstrate how you can quickly create an awesome app by utilizing Kii Cloud

Judging criteria:

Opera Software

Since version 15, Opera for desktop now supports most Chrome extension APIs, in addition to its own Opera-specific extension APIs. Use the tutorials, sample extensions and API documentation on http://dev.opera.com/extension-docs/ as a starting point, and build an extension for the Opera browser for desktop. Judging criteria:

  • must provide a clear added value to the browsing experience
  • no external scripts are allowed: all scripts must be included inside the extension
  • good UX is important
  • pretty graphics are a plus
  • support for multiple languages is a plus

  • The top team will receive a Samsung Galaxy Note 3.
  • The second and third team will receive a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7” each.
  • In addition, a good extension built will also be featured on Opera’s browser.

Build an app that solves a local problem (e.g. problem with Jakarta), with an ad monetization implementation that is least intrusive and provides maximum value to users

Judging Criteria:

  1. Must identify local issue.
  2. Must provide a good solution to issue.
  3. Must incorporate Android Design Principles.

  5. Must integrate AdMob into UX in a non-intrusive manner.

Millennial Media

Custom prizes for top developers that download and install Millennial Media's iOS or Android SDK 5.1 into their app. Developing an app with a monetization strategy built into the UX is critical to running a successful developer business.

Instructions:

  1. Sign up for an mMedia account here
  2. Email your account to seagms@millennialmedia.com with email header: [TechinAsia Hackathon 2013]
  3. Install Millennial Media's iOS or Android SDK 5.1 into the app, integrate banner and/or interstitial ads, and send test impressions

  • Impact: Would the application have real social impact? Can it change the world, or at least help someone in your community?
  • Presentation: how well do you present and demo your product?

Shopify

Shopify merchants are able to customize their Shopify store functionality with Shopify Apps (https://apps.shopify.com/), however, there are still several functionalities which merchants would love to have in order to grow their business in Asia. Use the Shopify API documentations on http://docs.shopify.com/api to build an application on the Shopify platform which have the solutions to the problems as described below. You may also explore applications which provide unique value to Shopify merchants. Demonstrate your app from the merchant's point of view.

  • Uploading product images requires constant cropping and resizing on Shopify.
  • I am unable to readily translate my English language store to Asian languages such as Bahasa Indonesa, Melayu and Mandarin.
  • If I want to market my products on other marketplaces (e.g. Tokobagus, Gmarket), I have to upload them manual one by one. If only there is a tool which is integrated to these marketplaces.

Judging Criteria:

  • Team must have signed up for a Shopify developer account (instructions can be found on http://docs.shopify.com/api/the-basics/getting-started)

  • User experience for the merchant and the end customer

Judging Criteria:

  • Creativity & innovation: how you can propose an innovative/creative solution to our problem
  • Usability/ease of function: user-friendliness of proposed idea

Prizes:

  • 1st winner = 3-month free premium membership  + Rp 1,000,000 credits on Freelancer.com
  • 2nd  winner = 3-month free standard membership + Rp 500,000 credits on Freelancer.com

  • You can formulate and plan your hack ideas beforehand, but no code should be written before the Hackathon start.
  • You need to be working on at least one of the challenges at the hackathon
  • No restriction to group numbers, but 3 to 4 members should suffice. Think twice before going any higher than that
  • One team, one product. No more than that
  • You can code in any language and for any platform. No restrictions.
  • No outsourcing is allowed. Every line of code and every pixel should be done within your group and during the hackathon itself
  • Asking for advice from APIs, platform, and language supporters is encouraged
  • Everyone has to stay overnight at the Hackathon to ensure all work is done within the premises and within 24 hours. Sleep area is provided
  • No powerpoint slides should be used for pitch. Cut the bullshit. Head on straight to demo. You only have 180 seconds
  • If any one of the rules is broken, the entire team will be disqualified. and we have done it before. Please don’t ruin the competition for everyone else.

 

1. Will food be provided?

Yes! - Dinner and supper for Day 1. Breakfast and lunch for Day 2, including a surprise midnight supper party. There will also be a free flow of coffee and snacks to keep you awake.

2. Is this Hackathon only for experienced developers?

No. Anyone can participate.

3. Will there be hands-on guidance for the Hackathon?

We do have consultants for each API and platform. But they will most likely be very busy. Don’t expect hands on help, do expect quick but thoughtful advice.

4. What should we bring?

a. Laptop with charger b. For mac users, please bring your VGA cable for pitches c. Extra clothing d. Toiletries

Optional stuff: a. Mobile phones of the platform you want to code for. b. Personal mobile internet c. Water bottle for drinks

5. How can we form groups?

You can either form groups with your own friends or crash someone's group when you're there.

6. What is the judging criteria?

It's simple - based on usability and design. Bonus points will be given for good pitch and an app built to solve real-world problem.

7. How long is the pitch?

90 seconds. No powerpoint slides are allowed.

8. So how the hell do we pitch?

Simple. You can pitch/demo through a visualizer (provided by us), your laptop, or through your mobile device.

9. Do we have to use at least one of the APIs available at the hackathon?

Yes, you will have to use at least one API and opt for at least one challenge at this hackathon.

10. Are we allowed to make a complete Game Design Document before the Hackathon start?

Yes. That should be fine. Planning is okay but no lines of code should be written prior to this hackathon

11. Are we allowed to use game engine during the hackathon? (E.g. Cocos2d, Unity 3D)

Yes, that's fine.

12. For designer/artist, may we bring our own design tools (E.g. Wacom) to the Hackathon?

Yes, that's fine.

13. Are we allowed to do some research related to some available technology that we would like to use in the game? (Writing some code to know how and what can the technology do) and then use them in the hackathon?

Yes, testing is fine.

14. Is googling (for source code and references) allowed?

Yes, that's fine.
